This local group was originally chartered by American Mensa as PensaMensa on July 5, 1987, with Mabel Loesch as the first LocSec. The Zip codes in the local group chartered area were 32422 to 32499 and 32500 to 32599. It was split off from the Tallahassee Mensa Local Group. Mabel who passed away in 2014, also was the long-time Chairperson for the Northwest Florida Mensa Scholarship Committee.
The group changed names from PensaMensa to Northwest Florida Mensa in March 2000 to reflect their expanded range since the last group boundary realignment. Northwest Florida Mensa now covers all of Florida west of the Apalachicola River, which is all of Florida that is in the Central Time Zone as shown on the map below.
